Become a sponsor to José M. Requena Plens
Firmware and software engineer in Valencia, Spain, with a research background in acoustics — metamaterials, simulation and measurement. These days I design embedded systems and the software around them: bare-metal MCUs, C, industrial communications and on-hardware testing.
The acoustics did not go anywhere. phonometry, the Python library I keep growing, is that half of the work made reusable: the metrology I used to write once per project, packaged so it can be checked against the standards it claims to implement.
Everything I build in the open, I also run in the open.
What your sponsorship supports
Most of my projects are libraries you install once and forget about. A few of them are services I host myself, on my own hardware, at home:
- mcp.jmrp.io — my Model Context Protocol servers, publicly callable. The Library Genesis one needs no account and no credentials; the GitLab one takes a per-request token and never stores it.
- The homelab around them, which also carries a Mastodon instance, a Matrix homeserver, an AT Protocol PDS, and Tor relays and bridges.
There is no hosting invoice behind any of that — there is hardware that wears out and electricity that does not stop. Sponsorship goes there, and towards the hours that never show up in a release note: reviewing dependency updates, answering issues, keeping the CI honest.
What I maintain
| Project | What it is |
|---|---|
| gitlab-mcp-server | The GitLab API exposed as AI-accessible tools. Go. In the official MCP registry, and packaged for npm, Docker, Homebrew and WinGet. |
| libgen-mcp | Search and download books, papers, comics and standards from Library Genesis. No account required. |
| phonometry | Acoustic measurement and prediction for Python, validated against published standards with conformance checks enforced in CI. Still growing — new domains go in as I need them. |
| cs-routeros-bouncer | CrowdSec bouncer for MikroTik RouterOS. Go. |
| TFG-TFM_EPS | LaTeX thesis template for the University of Alicante, used by students I will never meet. |
My papers, theses and software releases are archived with DOIs on Zenodo.
What I am building now
A hardware password manager for ESP32-S3, talking BLE to the device you are typing on. Most of my time goes there at the moment, and the posts I have been writing on device-bound key derivation and encrypt-then-MAC vaults are its engineering notes.
Where to find me
I write about what I build at jmrp.io — embedded cryptography, nginx hardening, MikroTik networking. On the fediverse I am @jmrplens@mstdn.jmrp.io, and my repositories mirror to GitLab.
Sponsoring is welcome but never expected: every one of these projects is MIT-licensed and will stay free whether or not anyone funds it.
