Summary

Modernizes the XSC implementation for C++17 without changing the C++ code that XSC generates.

  • Modernizes XSC and the retained CCF support code with C++17 language and standard-library facilities.
  • Removes legacy Xerces 2 compatibility code and replaces Boost filesystem, regex, system, and program-options use with standard-library facilities and ACE_Get_Opt.
  • Simplifies the retained CCF layout, removes unused CCF code, and modernizes its indentation and introspection helpers.
  • Adds a 120-column formatting policy for tracked C/C++ sources.
  • Extends CI to use Ubuntu 24.04 and its default compiler, cancels superseded runs, and builds XSC, enabled examples, generated schema tests, DanceX11 schemas, and validation-rejection tests.
  • Removes the now-unused Boost CI dependency.

Deliberate scope

This changes XSC itself and its build/test infrastructure only. Generated C++ output is not intentionally modernized by this pull request.

Validation

  • Regenerated and built XSC with make -j8.
  • Regenerated and built all enabled examples and schema tests.
  • Ran Tests/Validation/run_test.pl.
  • Generated and compiled the DanceX11 deployment schemas.
  • Verified xsc has no Boost runtime dependency and exercised C++ and IDL generation.

Walkthrough

This pull request modernizes C++ ownership and declarations across schema parsing, semantic graph and traversal code, Xerces utilities, and the command-line tool. It replaces selected raw or legacy ownership patterns, adds move operations to XStr, and updates pointer checks, aliases, exception specifications, and override declarations.

Changes

C++ modernization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Semantic graph and traversal declarations
XSC/SemanticGraph/*, XSC/Traversal/*
The graph code uses std::addressof for selected pointer operations and rewrites aliases with using. The traversal declarations add override; selected classes delete copy and move operations.
Xerces string ownership
XSC/utils/XercesString.*
XStr adds noexcept move construction and move assignment. Its append and erase methods allocate replacement buffers through Xerces’ memory manager.
Xerces helpers and resolver declarations
XSC/utils/XML_Error_Handler.*, XSC/utils/XML_Helper*, XSC/utils/XML_Schema_Resolver.*
The XML helpers adopt unique_ptr for parser ownership and use Xerces-qualified types. Exception messages use XMLString::release; the XMLException path rethrows the caught exception. Error-handler and resolver declarations update overrides and special member functions. write_DOM still returns false.
Parser ownership and namespace lookup
XSC/Parser.*
The parser uses managed buffers and unique_ptr in place of Boost scoped arrays and auto_ptr. ns_prefix drops its Boolean parameter and uses lookupPrefix.
Command-line ownership and diagnostics
XSC/xsc.cpp
The command-line tool uses unique_ptr for the parsed schema, updates ErrorDetector declarations, and qualifies stream operations. Existing error return values remain unchanged.

The normal XSC build is not shown to be blocked, but users of the public graph deletion methods cannot compile against this change. Fix those methods before merging unless that API break is explicitly accepted.

Explanation

The title accurately describes the broad modernization changes across XSC. It does not identify the primary ownership change from std::auto_ptr to std::unique_ptr, but it remains related and understandable.

A rabbit checks each pointer twice,
Then hops through aliases clean and nice.
Smart buffers travel by his side,
While Xerces strings take a ride.
The schema rests; the burrow’s bright.
