Native SSO for Mobile Apps: device secret provider, derived consent, token exchange clients - #2748
Implements the eSignet side of OpenID Connect Native SSO for Mobile Apps 1.0 on top of the
ThunderID engine changes (companion PR): a first native app that logs in with scope=... device_sso
receives a device_secret; a sibling app of the same vendor exchanges the ID token and the device
secret for its own DPoP-bound access token without a second login or consent screen.
Changes
internal/engine/device_secret_provider.go — providers.DeviceSecretProvider and providers.DeviceSSOConsentProvider:
device secrets are signed-then-encrypted JWTs (JWS by the OIDC signing key, JWE
RSA-OAEP-256/A256GCM to the new OIDC_SERVICE/DEVICE_SECRET_ENC component encryption key
provisioned at startup), carrying iss, sub, auth_id, sid, client_id, scope, acr, claims, cnf.jkt, iat, exp, jti, token_type;
generation and validation require device_sso in the client's allowed_authorization_scopes; validation checks issuer, expiry and the vendor family (same
relying party or allowed_child_clients);
a signed KYC token from the identity system is unpacked into claims so the engine can serve the
sibling app's userinfo; an encrypted KYC token stays opaque;
generation refuses a secret without cnf.jkt and validation treats one as invalid_grant, so
every device secret is key-bound;
ResolveDerivedConsent allows the exchange only when the user's consent to the first app covers
the sibling's claims and authorization scopes, and records a consent for the sibling with an
audit row; an existing broader consent of the sibling is kept (widened, never narrowed; one
history row per change); otherwise the engine answers interaction_required.
Client management accepts the token_exchange and refresh_token grants and the allowed_child_clients additional config (validated as a non-empty array of unique client ids);
the engine client carries the registered grant types; deployment defaults allow the token exchange
and refresh grants and advertise device_sso. A super app registered with refresh_token renews
its tokens without a new login and keeps the device-secret binding (§3.4.3); the engine's inbound
client declares eSignet's pairwise subject (the identity system's PSU token) as a mapped subject so
the refresh grant does not try to resolve it as an engine entity.
Tests: device_secret_provider_test.go (28 cases), client validation and engine client mapping
tests; kmtest can now round-trip JWE keys.
How to test
cd esignet-service && go test ./...
# end to end (docker-compose dependent services + ./make.sh run), from the hackathon repository:
python3 tests/native_sso_e2e.py # 46 checks: issuance, binding, exchange, refresh, negative cases, re-consent
Dependencies
Requires the ThunderID companion PR (DeviceSecretProvider, DeviceSSOConsentProvider, token
exchange with device-secret actor tokens). Until that PR is merged and tagged, this branch keeps go.mod's replace github.com/thunder-id/thunderid => ../../thunderid/backend, i.e. it builds
against a checkout of the companion branch feature/ps03-native-sso-1.1.x of DevAnuragT/thunderid placed next to this repository (the submission repository's scripts/fetch-backends.sh and deploy/docker-compose.yml do exactly that). The replace will be
dropped once the upstream ThunderID version exists; no other go.mod entry changes.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added Native SSO for mobile apps, allowing eligible child apps to exchange a device secret and ID token for a DPoP-bound access token.
Added support for token-exchange and refresh-token grants, the device_sso scope, and configuring permitted child apps.
Added discovery metadata and token responses for Native SSO, including device-secret details and additional error codes.
Device-secret validity is configurable, with a default of 30 days.
Documentation
Added Native SSO setup and integration guidance, including security requirements and error handling.
Added a Postman collection for trying the flow and its security checks.
… derive child-app consent
- Device secrets are now signed-then-encrypted (JWS inside an RSA-OAEP-256/A256GCM JWE) to a
dedicated OIDC_SERVICE component encryption key provisioned at startup, so the value is
opaque to the apps that store and forward it.
- Generation checks the super app's allowed_authorization_scopes for device_sso; validation
checks the presenting client too, verifies issuer/expiry and keeps the vendor-family rule.
- The device secret carries the sid shared with the ID token.
- ResolveDerivedConsent implements the engine's DeviceSSOConsentProvider: a child app may
only silently sign in when the user's consent to the super app covers the claims and
scopes it asks for; the derived consent is recorded for the child app with an audit row.
- MOSIP_ESIGNET_DEVICE_SECRET_VALIDITY_SECONDS bounds the device secret lifetime.
- kmtest keeps DB-resident key records and thumbprint lookups so JWE round-trips are testable.

…ative SSO
Client registration accepts "token_exchange" next to "authorization_code", the engine
client carries the grant types the client registered instead of a hardcoded authorization
code grant, and the deployment defaults allow the RFC 8693 token exchange grant and the
device_sso scope so a child app can redeem a sibling's device secret.

A signed KYC token from the identity system is unpacked into individual claims when the
device secret is minted, so the engine can serve a sibling app's userinfo from the device
secret after a Native SSO token exchange. An encrypted KYC token stays opaque.
Signed-off-by: Anurag Thakur <anuragthakur2102@gmail.com>
GenerateDeviceSecret accepted an empty cnf.jkt, which made the device secret
a 30-day bearer credential for a client that did not use DPoP. Require the
DPoP key thumbprint when minting, and reject a device secret without cnf.jkt
when it is presented on a token exchange.
Signed-off-by: Anurag Thakur <anuragthakur2102@gmail.com>
ResolveDerivedConsent overwrote the child app's consent with the derived one
on every exchange, narrowing a consent the user had given interactively and
adding a consent_history row per exchange. Leave an existing, unexpired
consent untouched when it already covers the derived one; when the derived
consent adds claims or scopes, widen the existing record instead of
replacing it. A history row is now written only when the consent changes.

…ed, conformance matrix, threat model, Postman collection
- native-sso.md gains the spec-conformance matrix (Native SSO 1.0, RFC 8693, RFC 9449) and the
threat model with the reference apps' demo-only shortcuts; the re-consent example uses email.
- OpenAPI: the exchange's audience parameter, the stricter scope/DPoP/openid rules on both grants
and the native_sso_supported discovery field.
- Relying-party guide: the rules a native app must follow.
- postman-collection/Go-eSignet-NativeSSO.postman_collection.json: the Native SSO flow with every
negative case (environment generated from the registered clients, keys never committed).

Walkthrough
This change adds Native SSO support for native apps. It adds device-secret issuance and validation, derived consent for child-app token exchange, grant and lifetime configuration, protocol documentation, and a Postman collection for the flow and error cases.
The API schema documents token exchange, response fields, errors, and discovery metadata. Client validation and engine grant mapping recognize token exchange and refresh-token grants. Configuration adds device-secret lifetime and child-client registration. Deployment settings add Native SSO grants and scope.
Device-secret issuance and validation esignet-service/internal/engine/device_secret_provider.go, esignet-service/internal/engine/device_secret_provider_test.go, esignet-service/cmd/esignet/main.go
Startup wires the device-secret provider and requests its encryption certificate. The provider issues and validates encrypted device secrets, checks client eligibility and DPoP binding, and returns a hash and expiry. Tests cover issuance and validation.
Derived consent checks and updates esignet-service/internal/engine/consent_provider.go, esignet-service/internal/engine/device_secret_provider.go, esignet-service/internal/engine/device_secret_provider_test.go
The provider checks originating consent against requested claims and scopes. It preserves sufficient child consent or creates or widens the child consent record. Tests cover these outcomes.
Supporting key and backend changes esignet-service/internal/keymanager/kmtest/kmtest.go, esignet-service/go.mod
The in-memory key-manager querier stores records and resolves aliases by certificate thumbprint. The ThunderID module replacement points to a local path.
The collection exercises super-app authorization, child-app exchange and userinfo, repeated exchange, and scope, vendor, DPoP, secret-integrity, and consent error cases.

Possibly related issues
mosip/esignet#2537: The new collection includes client assertions and documents issuer-based audience use in the token-exchange flow, which is related to the issue’s audience guidance.
mosip/esignet#2600: The token-exchange flow uses DPoP proofs and returns a DPoP-bound access token; the summaries do not establish that the authorization-code path enforces a client-mandated proof.
Possibly related PRs
mosip/esignet#2739: Both changes address the private_key_jwt audience contract in Postman and token-flow documentation.
mosip/esignet#2761: Both changes update the ThunderID backend replacement; this PR uses the local backend path and depends on the companion backend changes.

Allow token_exchange in the client-management schemas.
Line 635 restricts registration to authorization_code. The update and patch schemas do the same at Lines 1316 and 1581. A client that follows docs/native-sso.md and registers for token_exchange fails OpenAPI validation, so generated management clients cannot register a child app for the documented flow. In a normal repository checkout, ../../thunderid/backend does not exist. Go cannot resolve ThunderID, so the service’s build and test workflow is blocked. Publish the required companion change, update the pinned module version, and keep the local replacement in a developer-only workspace. Add allowed_child_clients to the additional-config allowlist, and validate its value as a string array.
Client registration, full update, and patch all call validateAdditionalConfig. The validator rejects any key that is not in allowedAdditionalConfigKeys with invalid_additional_config. That map does not contain allowed_child_clients. A super client that sets this key therefore fails before it is stored. The sameVendorFamily branch that reads this key cannot be configured through the client-management API. A child in a different relying party (RpID) cannot redeem a device secret through this path. Same-RP siblings are not affected, because they match on RpID.
Validate the value in the same change. The consumer accepts only []any of strings or []string. Any other value is ignored and the child is rejected. Apply the same checks used for allowed_authorization_scopes: a non-empty array, unique entries, and non-blank strings.

…ice-secret token exchange
Implements OpenID Connect Native SSO for Mobile Apps 1.0 in the engine so that sibling
native applications of one vendor can sign in silently after one login, behind a provider
interface that leaves the device secret's format, storage and lifecycle to the deployment.
Why: native applications share no browser cookies, so every application of a vendor repeats
the full sign-in. MOSIP eSignet (Go), which embeds this engine, needs the standard hand-off
for its Native SSO feature (MOSIP Decode 2026, problem statement 03); the companion change is
mosip/esignet#2748 and exercises this branch end to end.
What:
- device_sso is a protocol scope (never mapped to a resource server), allowed per client
through its allowed authorization scopes, valid only with openid and on a DPoP-bound token
request.
- DeviceSecretProvider (GenerateDeviceSecret, ValidateDeviceSecret) and the optional
DeviceSSOConsentProvider, registered with WithDeviceSecretProvider; the engine never
inspects the secret.
- Authorization-code grant: mints the device secret (sub, auth_id, sid, client_id, scope,
acr, consented claims, cnf.jkt), returns it as device_secret, and puts ds_hash
(BASE64URL(SHA-256(device_secret)), derived by the engine) and sid on the ID token.
- Refresh-token grant (§3.4.3): while device_sso stays in scope, a valid device_secret
presented with the request (bound to the same subject, client and DPoP key) is kept and a
missing or invalid one is replaced, and the refreshed ID token carries the matching ds_hash
and sid.
- Token exchange: actor_token_type=urn:openid:params:token-type:device-secret with an
ID-token subject token (an expired ID token stays acceptable; signature, nbf, typ and
revocation are enforced). Checks: ds_hash, sid and sub match, DPoP key equals cnf.jkt,
audience equals the issuer, client enabled for token exchange and device_sso, scope within
the device secret's grant and the client's registered scopes, device_sso never exchanged,
act.sub is the originating application, derived consent or interaction_required.
- Discovery advertises native_sso_supported when a provider is configured.
- Guides (authorization code, OpenID Connect, token exchange, server metadata) and the
OpenAPI sources (oauth2.yaml, discovery.yaml) document the behaviour.
- Unit tests for every rule in granthandlers, tokenservice, oauth2/utils and discovery.

Keeps the local ThunderID replace in go.mod; the companion checkout now has to be the
feature/ps03-native-sso-1.1.x build branch, which is the exact 1.1.x commit develop-go pins plus the
Native SSO change.

develop-go is merged in (updated thunderid version to 1.1.x branch #2761 moved the ThunderID pin to 1.1.x), so the PR is mergeable again. The only conflict was the replace line in go.mod, which keeps pointing at the local ThunderID checkout; the companion branch for that checkout is now feature/ps03-native-sso-1.1.x on my fork, i.e. the Native SSO commit of OpenID Connect Native SSO for Mobile Apps: device secrets and token exchange thunder-id/thunderid#6055 cherry-picked onto the exact 1.1.x commit develop-go pins, so the build matches upstream apart from the Native SSO change. go test ./... passes and the end-to-end suite is 35/35 against the rebuilt stack.
The outside-diff finding on validate.go is fixed: allowed_child_clients is now in the additional-config allowlist and validated like allowed_authorization_scopes (non-empty array of unique, non-blank client ids), with tests in ValidateTestSuite. Thanks, that was a real gap: a super app with cross-relying-party siblings could not be registered through the API.
The earlier threads on the audience example and the two standalone tests were addressed in previous pushes and are resolved. The go.mod replace stays until the ThunderID change is released, as described in the PR text.

Remove exposed signing and client private keys.
The document states that the vendor keystore, password, and client private keys are committed or packaged in APK resources. Anyone who obtains them can sign an app that passes the signature-level IPC checks or impersonate the client. Generate disposable test keys locally, exclude them from version control and APK resources, and rotate any exposed keys.
Required documentation change
- The vendor signing keystore and its password are committed (`mobile-sample/keystore/`) so judges- can build apps that pass the signature permission.+ The sample generates disposable test keys locally. Signing keys and client private keys must not be+ committed or packaged in APK resources.

Enable refresh_token for native SSO clients.
validateGrantTypes rejects refresh_token, and the deployment allowlist does not enable ThunderID's refresh handler. As a result, API-registered clients cannot use the refresh grant or receive refresh tokens from the authorization-code flow. This blocks the documented device-secret refresh path and may force a new interactive login after token expiry.

Document both audience validation errors in the Native SSO error table.
The table presents the exchange errors as a complete list, but it omits two documented audience outcomes. A child app can receive invalid_request when it omits audience and invalid_target when it sends a value other than the issuer. Without these entries, an integrator can misclassify the response and apply the wrong recovery path. The OpenAPI contract already contains the required definitions.

Allow refresh_token in all client-management grant enums.
The server accepts refresh_token, and the Native SSO documentation requires it for the super app refresh flow. The OpenAPI request schemas omit it, so schema-validating relying-party management clients cannot describe or submit a refresh-capable client. Add the value to every client-management create, update, and patch request enum.

All three applied: allowed_child_clients (non-empty array of unique, non-blank client ids) is in the create, update and patch client schemas; the PAR scope is a space-delimited string with the supported values in its description and an example instead of a single-value enum; and the token response schema exposes refresh_token.

main.go: the consent service is created once from the shared database connection and handed to
both the consent provider and the device-secret provider.

Merged develop-go again (Go 1.27 and the persistence-layer change); the only conflict was the shared database connection in main.go, where the consent service is now created once and handed to both the consent provider and the device-secret provider. go test ./... passes on Go 1.27 and the end-to-end suite is 46/46 against the rebuilt stack.

Document the token-exchange response type.
A successful token exchange requires issued_token_type, but the response schema does not define it. Generated clients may therefore omit this field. Add it and require it for token-exchange responses. (openid.net)

Both applied: the token response schema documents issued_token_type (always urn:ietf:params:oauth:token-type:access_token on a successful exchange), and MOSIP_ESIGNET_DEVICE_SECRET_VALIDITY_SECONDS is in the README environment-variable table.

Implements the eSignet side of OpenID Connect Native SSO for Mobile Apps 1.0 on top of the
ThunderID engine changes (companion PR): a first native app that logs in with

ResolveDerivedConsentallows the exchange only when the user's consent to the first app coversthe sibling's claims and authorization scopes, and records a consent for the sibling with an

client declares eSignet's pairwise subject (the identity system's PSU token) as a mapped subject so
the refresh grant does not try to resolve it as an engine entity.
