fix(quality): keep Django and unittest hooks out of the dead-code list (#228) - #437
Problem.--quality-delta reported unittest and Django hooks (setUp, tearDown, setUpClass, setUpTestData, test*) as dead code. The framework calls them. A closure that called self.hook() also lost the call.
Change. These names count as called. test* counts only in a test module (isTestPath or Django tests.py). A closure that calls self./cls. keeps the overrides of that method live. The hook predicates sit in a LangFacts column (frameworkEntryHooks), so the langidentity ratchet does not rise. kQSnapCacheScheme 22 to 23; tripwire re-pinned.
Limits (in the changelog fragment). Names are matched without types or scope: a setUp in application code is also live, and any test* def in a test module is live. It errs toward live.
Checks. Adversarial review ran 3 rounds until no new bugs. Full gate suite on Linux (g++-14); remaining failures were environment timeouts and missing tools, and the suspect gates (compactlegendcheck, crossdirincludecheck, impactpartitioncheck, selfcheckcheck, xmlwellformed) pass when run alone. changelog.d/228-*.md added.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Python dead-code analysis now recognizes Django and unittest lifecycle hooks, including module-, class-, and test-level methods, so framework-invoked code is not incorrectly reported as unused.
Calls to methods through unshadowed self or cls references inside nested functions now keep the relevant methods and overrides from being incorrectly reported as unused.
Test-method recognition is limited to recognized test modules; other similarly named functions remain eligible for dead-code reports.

Walkthrough
Python dead-code analysis now recognizes selected Django and unittest hooks and tracks eligible self and cls calls from nested closures. The quality-snapshot cache scheme advances from version 22 to 23. A Python integration test checks the reported dead-code results.
Python enables framework hook recognition. Listed setup and teardown hooks are treated as invoked. test* methods qualify only under the specified naming and test-path conditions.
Receiver dispatch through nested scopes src/quality.h
Scope tracking now records class owners and enclosing methods. Eligible unqualified self and cls calls can resolve through an enclosing method when the nested definition does not bind that receiver.
Dead-set validation and snapshot update test/qualitycheck.sh, src/quality.h, changelog.d/versions.md, test/qschemetripcheck.sh, changelog.d/228-django-unittest-hooks.md
The integration test checks that only BaseCase.never_called and unused_helper are reported in its fixture. The semantic-source manifest and cache scheme record the changes, and the changelog describes the recognition rules and stated scope limits.
Some valid Python tests can still be reported as dead code. The remaining cases are bounded, but should be addressed or tracked before relying on the new exemption.

Explanation
The changes remain connected to issue [#228]. The LangFacts field supports framework-hook configuration, the quality-analysis changes implement hook and receiver dispatch handling, the integration test covers the reported false positives, and the snapshot scheme and tripwire updates maintain the related test data. No unrelated change is established.

Explanation
Issue [#228] requires both correct handling of Django/unittest dynamic hooks and deterministic zero findings for an identical tree. The PR adds framework hook recognition, test-module filtering for test*, self./cls. dispatch handling, and an integration test. The supplied changes do not show a fix or test for the identical-tree --quality-delta case. The linked issue therefore remains partially unmet.
Resolution
Add the deterministic identical-tree fix and an automated regression test that compares an unchanged working tree with HEAD and verifies zero gating regressions.

setUpTestData calls cls.make_shared() directly, and FwCase does not override make_shared. The existing nested closure uses self. Therefore, a regression limited to subclass overrides reached through an unshadowed nested cls closure can pass the exact dead-set assertion.
The related dispatch fixture tests direct cls dispatch and nested functions with an explicit cls parameter. It does not cover this free-variable path.

Update the setUpTestData fixture to call cls.make_shared() through a nested

Include the remaining unittest entry hooks.
If a TestCase implements runTest, the runner can call it without an indexed call to that name. IsolatedAsyncioTestCase likewise calls asyncSetUp and asyncTearDown. None matches this hook list or the test* rule, so these methods can still receive false dead-code findings. Add these names to the hook exemption. (docs.python.org)

Accept lowercase test prefixes.
If a test method is named testfoo, this condition rejects it. Both unittest and pytest can collect names with a test prefix, so --quality-delta can still report that executed method as dead. Remove the delimiter and capitalization restriction. (docs.pytest.org)

Also applied the nitpick in the review body: the test fixture now calls cls.make_shared() through a nested closure, and FwCase overrides make_shared. qualitycheck passes.

The redhat-et#228 arm passed with either new guard removed. Add three expected-dead rows:
a test* function and a testThing method in application code (the test-module
clause), and a hook reached only through a closure that binds self as its own
parameter (the bound-receiver clause). The arm now fails with either guard
mutated and on the base.

setup_method, teardown_method, setup_module, teardown_module, setup_function,

pythonFrameworkInvokedSymbol now reads the same kXunitHooks / kUnittestHooks tables
as pythonRunnerRoot (hoisted to namespace scope, plus kUnittestModuleHooks) instead
of a second hand-written list. --dead-code and --safe-delete also skip
setUpTestData and runTest in a TestCase subclass. The xunit names stay dead in
application code. pytest conftest hooks are named in the changelog as a floor.

@llvm-x86, thank you. This one is real. #228 had sat in our queue since 0.6.2, and you fixed it in a way we could check line by line.
What we checked:
The closure host is right.pythonRecordParent finds the nearest enclosing method. On textual it brings back PythonFileCommands.startup, which Provider._post_init calls only from inside its post_init_task closure. Our probes went two closures deep through a mixin (class Impl(Other, Mixin)): live. A class declared inside a method: its subclass override is live, and a same-named method on the outer class stays dead. Nothing is kept live just because some unrelated class has a method with that name.
The bound bitmask does what the changelog says.def cb(self): self.hook() and def cb(self=self) do not keep the host's overrides alive.
The test* clause stays inside test modules. In application code, def test_helper() and Svc.testThing are still dead. A test_factory in shop/tests_utils.py is also still dead, and so are starlette's benchmarks/routing_benchmark.pytest_* functions.
Before/after counts on five Python trees (flake8, starlette, pdoc, textual, and a cpython Lib/unittest + Lib/test/test_{json,email,asyncio} slice). The dead set shrinks by 192 / 468 / 60 / 1851 / 2624 rows, and the change adds none. We checked every removed row against its source. Each one is a hook or a test* def in a test module, plus the one textual closure above. None is wrong. Four rows in pdoc's test/testdata/math_misc.py fall under the "any test* def in a test module" limit, which your changelog already discloses.
--quality-delta=main..HEAD on the PR itself: regressions="0" gating="0". qualitycheck, qschemetripcheck, langidentitycheck and the dead-code gates pass. You also handled all three CodeRabbit notes (runTest/asyncSetUp/asyncTearDown, the lowercase test prefix, and the nested-cls fixture).
What we changed on top (three small commits on your branch, maintainerCanModify pushed to fix/228-django-hooks; yours stays byte-for-byte as the first commit):
4cb3f9bbArms that can go red. We mutated the two new guards: test* live in any file, and the closure-bound-receiver check removed. qualitycheck stayed green under each mutant. This commit adds three expected-dead rows (an app-code test_helper(), an app-code Svc.testThing, and a FwCase.bound_hook override reached only through def cb(self): self.bound_hook()). The arm is green on your head, red with either guard mutated, and red on main.
0a0589b9pytest xunit hooks, one table per framework.setup_method, teardown_method, setup_module, teardown_module, setup_function, teardown_function, setup_class and teardown_class now count as framework entry hooks in a test module (an app-code setup_method is still dead). pythonFrameworkInvokedSymbol reads the same kXunitHooks / kUnittestHooks tables as pythonRunnerRoot (hoisted to namespace scope, plus a small kUnittestModuleHooks for setUpModule / tearDownModule / load_tests) instead of a second list. As a side effect --dead-code and --safe-delete also skip setUpTestData and runTest in a TestCase subclass. The changelog fragment names the xunit hooks, and states the floor: pytest's conftest hooks such as pytest_configure are still reported. The same commit splits the self/cls closure dispatch out of frameworkEntryHooks into its own closureReceiverDispatch column (your question 3 from the first pass; no behavior change, langidentitycheck still 333). qschemetrip is re-pinned once; kQSnapCacheScheme stays at your 23 and the train renumbers it.
80dbb881deadprecisioncheck pin.setUpTestData and runTest in a TestCase subclass are now --dead-code runner roots (runner-root-excluded=6). Red on your head, green with the shared table.
Gates at the final head (plain build): qualitycheck, qschemetripcheck, langidentitycheck, deadcheck, deadprecisioncheck, deadfiltercheck, safedeletecheck, qsnapcachecheck, qsnapproducercheck, headsnapcachecheck, qddialscheck, qualitysignalcheck, registermacrocheck, printffmtparitycheck and changelogfragcheck pass, and --quality-delta=main..HEAD is regressions="0" gating="0". The flake8 and cpython-unittest censuses are unchanged (neither tree contains an xunit hook, so the new rule moves no row there).
One small leftover, no change needed from you: ratchet.tsv can drop 335 to 333 to lock in the langidentity gain. We handle that and the version renumbering when we merge (it lands in train 36). Your branch conflicts with your #438 only in the LangFacts field block (keep both fields) and the qschemetrip pin and log; we resolve those in the train.
Thank you for the review and the three commits. I have no changes to add. I will not push to this branch again, so I do not conflict with your commits. The conflict with #438 in the LangFacts block and the qschemetrip pin is yours to resolve in the train, as you said.
…eme 24; qschemetrip re-derived once
Renumbers redhat-et#438's placeholders (228 / 41) and redhat-et#437's (scheme 23) strictly above every live value:
