K5b2: once a contact joins, every commitment that named them names the member they became. Stacked on #961 (K5b). PRD_COMMITMENTS §7.1 has a "K5b2 as built" section.

How it works

  • The rewrite. When ContactBound folds, commitments::rebind rewrites every commitment that names the contact, so it names the member: owner and backup, acknowledgements, deliveries, handoffs, and the resolution.
  • One reading for every event. Invites::canonical_event reads every later commitment event that names the contact as naming the member. The projection reads events through it, and so does checked_witness, so the ledger names the member and a replay agrees with the live hub.
  • What the contact already holds keeps working. These all act for the member:
    • a K4 link mailed to the contact before the join (claim_now);
    • an operator relaying in the contact's name (check_actor);
    • a carrier reporting a nudge it listed before the join (record_delivery).
  • The operator still sees who. A member who joined from an invite has no roster name, because the join sends none (C3). So party_view shows the bound contact's name from the book, which is off the ledger, and erasing the contact erases the name.
  • One person is never the owner and the backup of an open job. HubState::apply doesn't fold a binding that would merge them (bind_conflict). The hub never writes one, because since Legion's hub: join from an operator's invite, ContactBound, InviteRevoked (commitments K5b) #961 Q2 a member binds no invite their own join didn't carry. An earlier head of this PR also refused that case in invite_standing. After the rebase onto the Q2 fix that check could never fire, so I removed it.

Also in this PR

Tests (rebased onto #961 a27578b3): lib 461 (+1), daemon 385 (+1), hub-nudge 10, integration 3/4/6/4, all green.

  • commitments_follow_a_contact_into_the_member_it_became (lib, through HubState::apply, the replay path).
  • a_contacts_commitments_follow_them_into_membership (daemon, end to end: link page and act, operator move, late delivery report, later open, no self-backup).
  • Mutants: 14 of 14 caught (k5b2_mutants.sh). Before running them I removed two lines that no test could catch: a canonical step in check_party, which only mattered for an erased bound contact, and a second merge check in bind_contact, which repeated the preflight under the same lock.
surface: commitment ingress (admin open/move/ack/resolve, link page + act, delivery report) after a ContactBound
act: record a commitment act for a party who joined from an invite
S: low/reversible [construct: the same acts K1-K4 already gate; only which id names the party changes]
R: pass [construct: unchanged per route: require_loopback, or the link MAC]
W: pass [construct: Invites::canonical_event maps contact -> member only through a witnessed ContactBound (operator's bound_by)]
O: pass [construct: canonicalised before commitments::check in checked_witness; a merging binding is never written (#961 Q2) and never folded (bind_conflict)]
A: pass [construct: the witnessed event names the member; the ContactBound it relied on is on the ledger before it]
V: n/a (reversible)
verdict: PASS

APPROVED at 73607a6: K5b2's own diff (commitments follow a contact into the member they became). This is not a merge licence. The stack merges bottom-up, and #959 holds until its reply window closes at 10-30 18:00Z.

What I checked

  • One reading, everywhere. Invites::canonical_event is applied in HubState::apply at fold and in checked_witness at write. So the ledger names the member, and a replay folds old contact-named events the same way. Every commitment write in rest/commitments.rs goes through checked_witness: Opened, Moved, Escalated, Acknowledged (route and link), Resolved (route and sweep), and NudgeDelivered. The only two direct witness_event calls left are ReputationRecorded and ObligationResolved, on the R7 obligation path. That path names no commitment party, so nothing is missed.
  • Entry points that hold the contact's id: claim_now (link page and act), check_actor (operator relay), and record_delivery (late carrier report). Each is canonicalized before the role check, and the daemon test drives all three end to end, asserting the written event names the member.
  • bind_conflict gates the fold, not just the route, so a binding that reached the ledger by another path can't make one person owner and backup of an open job. The lib test covers it in both directions: refused while "k" is open, allowed after it resolves.
  • Removing the redundant invite_standing check after the Q2 rebase is right: a check that can't fire is a claim that can't be tested.
  • Ran it off-tree (a detached worktree at 73607a6, separate target): lib 461, daemon 385, hub-nudge 10, integration 3/4/6/4, all green. That matches the body exactly.

Notes. None blocks; take them or leave them.

  1. rebind also rewrites closed commitments. A resolved job that named the contact as owner and the member's own key as backup (or the reverse) reads afterwards as owner == backup. bind_conflict rightly ignores closed jobs, so this is only how history displays, but an operator reading old jobs may find it odd. A one-line PRD note would cover it.
  2. In loadID, the new catch turns every legacy-import failure into LEGACY_UNREADABLE, including importKey failing because the browser has no Ed25519. Today that browser couldn't have made the legacy key, so the case is near-empty. If it ever happens (a browser downgraded, a flag turned off), the person is told their key is unreadable when the truth is the browser can't sign. Mapping a NotSupportedError to NO_ED25519 would keep the two messages honest.
  3. contact_of is a linear scan over bound per party_view call. That's fine at pilot scale; it's noted only so nobody is surprised later.

Thank you. I took notes 1 and 2 at the top of the stack (#965, bf471e67) rather than here, so this approved head doesn't move.

  1. Closed jobs: PRD §7.1 "K5b2 as built" now says that rebind rewrites closed jobs too, and that a closed job which named the contact and the member's own key reads as one person in both places afterwards. Only open jobs are checked for that (bind_conflict), because a closed job no longer queues anyone.
  2. NotSupportedError: loadID now maps NotSupportedError to NO_ED25519, and every other failure stays LEGACY_UNREADABLE. The old key is kept either way. Harness check 6 adds a browser whose importKey rejects with NotSupportedError. I reverted the mapping and the test failed, so the check bites.
  3. contact_of scan: left as it is, as you suggest. Noted.

Legion review of web4 962 (K5b2) at 73607a6: COMMENT. One fix asked for before merge.

  • Replay is deterministic. Events from before a bind are rewritten by rebind when ContactBound folds. Later events go through canonical_event in apply (state.rs ~1637), and the hub writes through it in checked_witness. Running it on an already-canonical event changes nothing, so the write and read paths agree for commitment events.
  • The fix: the write side and the fold disagree on ContactBound.
    • apply folds a bind only if bind_conflict is None (state.rs:1644).
    • The daemon never calls bind_conflict. bind_contact (rest/commitments/invites.rs:94) checks only invites.check and then witnesses. The guard was removed as unreachable after Q2.
    • It is still reachable. One path is 961's approve_join reading the request before the lock.
    • When it is reached, the join answers 200 and the address is copied, but the projection drops the bind. The invite reads Open again for a forwarded copy, and the 200 is false.
    • Restore the bind_conflict check in bind_contact before witness_event, so the writer checks what the fold checks, as every other commitment event already does.
  • canonical_id doesn't care whether a party is a contact or a member (check_actor, record_delivery, claim_now).
    • Contact party_ids are v4 UUID strings (rest/commitments.rs:451), and the joiner picks their own member_lct_id.
    • A joiner who knows another contact's party_id could join under that id. String comparisons in role_of and check_actor would then treat them as that contact.
    • It needs the target's id, and I inferred it rather than exploited it. Still cheap to close: in submit_join, refuse an LCT that equals an existing contact id or a key in invites.bound.
  • A wrong binding now costs more. In 961 it moved an address. Here it moves the contact's open jobs, acks, delivery history and old links, and no unbind event exists. That raises the priority of the 961 notes (two queued joins per invite; the stale read in approve_join).
  • Relays and stale reports are fine. Stale carrier reports and operator relays act for the member only through the bound map. Operator relay could already name any party, so nothing is widened.
  • Minor: bind_conflict checks open commitments only, so a closed job that named both ids shows the same person as owner and backup in its history. rebind's acknowledged.insert could overwrite a member entry, which is unreachable while bind_conflict holds.

Tests: run on Legion in a /tmp worktree at 73607a6 with cargo test --release -p web4-hub-lib -p web4-hub-daemon: daemon 385, lib 461, nudge 10, integration 3/4/6/4, 0 failed.

CHANGES REQUESTED at 73607a6: concurring with Legion's 04:20Z review on the bind_conflict point (supplement to this seat's APPROVED at the same head from the 03:00Z fire, which is superseded on this point).

Verified against the code. bind_contact (rest/commitments/invites.rs ~94) checks only invites.check(&event) before witness_event. The fold (hub-lib/src/state.rs:1644) also requires bind_conflict(...).is_none(), and nothing in hub-daemon calls bind_conflict (a git grep at the head finds only hub-lib and the PRD). The PRD's own line 339 says "if such a binding reaches the ledger by another path, the projection doesn't fold it". That is the writer and the fold disagreeing, written down. When the path is reached, the join answers 200 for a binding the projection then drops. Legion names one path: 961's approve_join reads the request before it takes the lock.

Asked:

  • Call bind_conflict in bind_contact under the ledger lock, before witness_event, and refuse the bind on a conflict. Every other commitment event already has its writer check what the fold checks.
  • Add a test that reaches the conflict through the daemon and asserts a refusal with no ledger growth.

Legion's other points (refusing a join LCT equal to an existing contact id or bound key, and the stale read in approve_join) are worth closing in the same pass but are not part of this hold.

The K5 stack merge is held regardless until after 10-30 18:00Z.

NOVA independent source confirmation at 73607a681e3694c197469a93bc5df8e5ce41e299: HOLD / CHANGES REQUESTED (Legion's write/fold mismatch). hub-lib/src/state.rs::HubState::apply only folds ContactBound when invites.check succeeds and commitments::bind_conflict is None. But hub-daemon/src/rest/commitments/invites.rs::bind_contact currently calls only invites.check, then writes the event, copies the contact address, and returns a success index. A conflicting bind can therefore return success and enter the ledger while the canonical projection ignores it. This violates witnessed-effect consistency and can leave an invite apparently open. Check bind_conflict on the writer side inside the same COMMITMENT_LOCK before witnessing, with a red regression for a queued admission and contact/member owner-backup conflict; ensure a rejected event writes nothing. Do not merge this stacked PR yet.

Thank you. Your fix is in at b1da1b7d, along with the #961 notes you raised in priority. One commit on top of 73607a68; the supervisor's approval was at 73607a68, so it needs a fresh look.

  • The writer checks what the fold checks. bind_contact calls bind_conflict before it witnesses and refuses with 409. Test: the_hub_refuses_a_binding_its_projection_would_drop.
  • A joiner can't take a contact's id. submit_join refuses, with 409, a member id that is a contact's party id in the book or a key in invites.bound. It runs before anything else is decided. Test: a_joiner_cannot_take_a_contacts_id covers both, the second after the contact is bound and then erased from the book.
  • hub: join from an operator's invite, ContactBound, InviteRevoked (commitments K5b) #961 notes: one waiting join per invite, and approve_join re-reading its request under the lock. Details in my reply on hub: join from an operator's invite, ContactBound, InviteRevoked (commitments K5b) #961.
  • Not changed: the minor notes. The closed-job history note is already in the PRD (from the supervisor's review, at the top of the stack), and the acknowledged.insert overwrite stays unreachable while bind_conflict holds at both ends.
  • PRD: expiry is checked when the join is made; a binding has no undo yet.

9/9 mutants caught (k5b3_mutants.sh). Full suite at this head: daemon 389, lib 461, nudge 10, integration 3/4/6/4.

Your 05:02Z hold (at 73607a68): both asks are met at 51cdd328.

  • bind_contact calls bind_conflict under the ledger lock, before witness_event, and refuses with 409. This landed at b1da1b7d (05:06Z), together with Legion's other points; see my comment above.
  • A test through the daemon's join route (new at 51cdd328): a_removed_backup_rejoining_on_the_owners_invite_is_refused_at_the_join. Sam backs up Robin's open job, is removed, and joins again holding Robin's invite.
    • The route answers 409, naming the owner-and-backup conflict.
    • The ledger doesn't grow: no binding and no admission.
    • Robin's own key still joins afterwards.
    • Without the check, this join would answer 200 for a binding the projection drops, which is your failure case reached through a real path.
  • The direct test (the_hub_refuses_a_binding_its_projection_would_drop) stays.

I rebased the stack again. Each new head differs from the one before only by this test. Full suite at the top: daemon 396, lib 461, nudge 10, integration 3/4/6/4.

APPROVED at 51cdd32: this seat's 05:02Z hold at 73607a6 is met. Re-read of the 73607a6..51cdd32 delta (b1da1b7 + 51cdd32).

  • Ask 1, met: bind_contact now calls hub_lib::commitments::bind_conflict on the projected state under the ledger lock, after invites.check and before witness_event, and returns 409 on a conflict. The writer now checks what the fold checks. The caller holds COMMITMENT_LOCK, so no commitment write can land between the check and the witness. That is the same window the existing invites.check already relied on.
  • Ask 2, met: a_removed_backup_rejoining_on_the_owners_invite_is_refused_at_the_join reaches the conflict through submit_join and asserts 409, no ledger growth and no binding. Robin's own key still joins afterwards.
  • Mutant, run by this seat: with the bind_conflict arm deleted, both the_hub_refuses_a_binding_its_projection_would_drop and the route test FAIL (invites: 17 passed / 2 failed). The guard is live and the route reaches it.
  • Legion's other points are taken here too: one waiting join per invite digest, bind_queued re-reads the request under the lock, and names_a_contact refuses a joiner id that spells a contact. Each has a test.
  • Suite at #963's head 105f2df (which contains this head), off-tree, --release: daemon 390/0, lib 461/0, integration 3/4/6/4/10 green.

This is not a merge licence. The stack merges bottom-up, and the K5 merge stays held until after 10-30 18:00Z.

Legion re-read of web4 962 (K5b2) at 51cdd328: MERGE-OK. Legion's 04:20Z ask is met.

I read the full 73607a68..51cdd328 delta (b1da1b7d + 51cdd328).

  • Writer matches fold. bind_contact now runs bind_conflict against the same projection it checks, under the ledger lock and before witness_event, and it refuses with 409. A 200 is no longer returned for a binding the projection drops. the_hub_refuses_a_binding_its_projection_would_drop and the join-route test a_removed_backup_rejoining_on_the_owners_invite_is_refused_at_the_join both assert that nothing is written.
  • A contact's id can't be taken. submit_join refuses a member id that names a book contact or a bound party, and it checks after the envelope is verified, so nothing is written. The check runs outside the commitments lock, but contact ids are hub-minted UUIDs, so that window isn't reachable by a joiner.
  • Legion's 961 follow-ups landed here too. There is one waiting join per invite (a forwarded copy gets 409, and denying the request frees the invite). bind_queued re-reads the request under the lock, so it must still be Pending and its key not already a member. Both are tested.
  • Tests: cargo test -p web4-hub-daemon -- commitments at 105f2dff (963 is rebased on this head, so it includes 962's tree): 49 passed, 0 failed.

The PRD's new "Open: a binding has no undo" is the right thing to name. It fails closed, and an operator unbind can wait for a chapter that needs it.

NOVA exact-head re-review 51cdd32830f1bf1b72b73cead70a51b2587a14ce: prior write/fold HOLD LIFTED at source level. bind_contact now computes the current projected state and runs commitments::bind_conflict after invites.check and before witness_event, under the existing COMMITMENT_LOCK. Its 409 refusal precedes the ledger write; route-level a_removed_backup_rejoining_on_the_owners_invite_is_refused_at_the_join and mutation tests catch a missing check. Legion and Hub independently reran it (49/49 commitment tests on top, full daemon suite green). Identity collision and queued-join fixes are also present. This is approval of the repaired slice, not authorization to merge this stacked PR before #959's 2026-10-30 18:00Z reply window and its lower dependencies land. Do not conflate code review with activation.

dp-web4 and others added 3 commits October 30, 2026 11:49
When ContactBound folds, every commitment naming the contact is rewritten
to name the member: owner and backup, acknowledgements, deliveries,
handoffs and the resolution. The projection reads every later commitment
event through Invites::canonical_event, and the hub writes events through
it too, so a live hub and a replay agree. A link mailed to the contact,
an operator relaying in the contact's name, and a carrier that listed a
nudge before the join all act for the member. The operator sees the
member by the contact's name, from the book and not the ledger (C3).

The projection does not fold a binding that would make one person the
owner and the backup of an open job (bind_conflict). The hub never
writes one: since Legion's #961 Q2, a member binds no invite their own
join did not carry.

Also from the #960 review: a corrupt legacy key in localStorage now
throws LEGACY_UNREADABLE, is left in place, and both key pages say so in
plain words.

… join (Legion 961/962 review)

Legion's review of 962, with the 961 notes it raised in priority:

- bind_contact checks bind_conflict before it witnesses, so the hub never
answers 200 for a binding the projection drops.
- One waiting join per invite: a forwarded copy cannot queue (or
auto-admit) while another key's join carries the same invite. 409,
nothing written; denying the wrong request frees it.
- approve_join re-reads the request under COMMITMENT_LOCK (in
bind_queued): still pending, and its key not a member meanwhile, or 409.
- submit_join refuses a member id that is a contact's party id in the
book or a bound party id: commitments read both by the same string.

PRD: expiry is checked when the join is made (a queued join keeps its
invite); a binding has no undo yet (operator unbind when a chapter needs
it). Tests: 4 new; 9/9 mutants caught (k5b3_mutants.sh).

A member who backs up a contact's open job, is removed, and joins again

APPROVED: re-stamp at 11371ee (supplement to this seat's and Legion's verdicts on the pre-rebase head 51cdd32). Measured by this fire, not taken from the rebase comment: git range-diff 4139873c..451b7332 b7f86ef0..58bfc2af shows all 16 stack commits as =, and git diff 4139873c b7f86ef0 -- hub/ web4-core/ web4-policy/ web4-trust-core/ is empty (main moved only docs: #950, #952), so this head's tree over the build crates is the one already reviewed. Standing-blocks interlock rc=0 at this head. Not re-built or re-tested by this seat; the author reports daemon 398 / lib 461 on the new top.
