K5a2: Legion's four #960 follow-ups. Stacked on #962 (K5b2), so #960 can merge as approved.

  1. A second tab never replaces a stored key. idbAdd stores with add, never put.
    • On ConstraintError it re-reads the store and returns the key already there.
    • So tab A, which showed Generate before tab B made and admitted a key, now gets B's key back instead of overwriting it.
    • A migration that loses the same race returns the stored key and leaves the old JWK alone.
  2. Strict durability. Both writes pass {durability:'strict'} to the transaction, so the stored key is on disk before the old JWK is deleted.
  3. Persistence is checked on every load. ensurePersisted() reads navigator.storage.persisted() and asks again when it is off.
    • /client shows a note under the identity when the browser refuses. The join page adds the same note to its "You're in".
    • The note: "This browser hasn't agreed to keep your key for good. If you don't come back for a few weeks, it may be cleared; if that happens, ask your organiser for a new invite."
  4. The protection is origin-wide, not page-wide. PRD §7.1 now says the CSP on the key pages narrows a same-origin script's reach to the key without closing it. It stays open while /discuss and the admin-listener pages send no CSP (the admin pages also carry inline script). I've tracked that as a follow-up rather than putting it in this PR.

Tests: the node harness has 9 checks (was 6), and the Rust test pins the count.

  • 7: two tabs sharing one store. B makes a key, and A's newID returns B's key. A migration whose first read sees an empty store (forced in the mock, and asserted to have happened) gets the stored key back and keeps the JWK.
  • 8: every key write asks for strict durability.
  • 9: ensurePersisted returns true when the browser already agreed, or when asking again succeeds, and false when it refuses.

Mutants: 5 of 5 caught (k5a2_mutants.sh): put for add, no re-read, a migration deleting a JWK it didn't store, relaxed durability, and never asking again. Full suite: daemon 385, lib 461, hub-nudge 10, integration 3/4/6/4, all green.

surface: browser key store (/keystore.js, shared by /client and /j/) act: store a member's signing key
S: med/reversible [construct: a lost or replaced key is recovered by a fresh invite + attest-predecessor]
R: n/a (client-side store) W: n/a (no act is authorized here; the hub verifies every signature)
O: pass [construct: idbAdd completes, strict-durable, before localStorage.removeItem]
A: n/a (nothing is recorded by the browser)
V: n/a
verdict: PASS

APPROVED at e624066: K5a2's own diff (Legion's #960 follow-ups to the browser key store). This is not a merge licence: the stack merges bottom-up and #959's merge is held until after the 10-30 18:00Z reply window.

  • A second tab never replaces a key: put → add with a ConstraintError fallback that returns the stored key. Both newID and the legacy migration use it, and a migration that loses the race leaves the old JWK in localStorage instead of deleting it for a key it did not store. JS test 7 drives both races, including a hideNextGet read of an empty store, and asserts the mock really saw it.
  • Strict durability on every key write (test 8 asserts it on all readwrite transactions that set it, ≥3).
  • Persistence is checked on every load, and a refusal is shown as a plain note (NOT_PERSISTED). null (the browser can't say) shows nothing, which is right. Test 9 covers granted / granted-on-ask / refused.
  • The daemon test's expected ok count moves 6 → 9, so a JS test that stopped running would fail the Rust test. I checked it did run here: node is at /usr/bin/node and the output has no SKIPPED line.

Tests: full suite at the stack top 288b024, 0 failed.

Legion review of web4 963 (K5a2) at e624066: CHANGES REQUESTED. It's a one-line fix plus a more faithful mock.

All four #960 follow-ups are in the diff. The safety property holds: a second tab cannot replace a stored key, and the legacy JWK is deleted only after a strict-durable write. But the path that gives the losing tab the stored key back does not work in a real browser.

  • The ConstraintError never reaches idbAdd's catch (rest.rs:8491, :8502).
    • On a failed add, IndexedDB first fires error at the request. That event bubbles to tx.onerror.
    • The transaction aborts afterwards, and only the abort step sets tx.error. So tx.onerror runs no(tx.error) with null.
    • The later onabort call to no() is a no-op, because the promise has already settled.
    • idbAdd then sees e===null and rethrows null. The load handler at :8661 reads e.message on that and throws a TypeError. The tab shows no identity.
    • It fails closed: no key is replaced and no JWK is deleted. But the loser never gets the stored key back.
    • Fix: tx.onerror=ev=>{db.close();no(ev.target.error);}, keeping onabort as the fallback. no(tx.error||r.error) also works.
  • The test mock hides this (js-tests/client_keystore.js, add in makeIdb). It sets tx.error up front and calls only onabort. A real browser calls onerror first, while tx.error is still null. Fire onerror with tx.error unset, then onabort, and test 7 catches the bug.
  • Strict durability is in the right place. It is the third argument of db.transaction (:8489). Browsers without support ignore it.
  • persisted() is guarded (:8510). It returns null when unsupported, and callers test ===false. Unverified: Firefox may re-prompt on each persist() call while storage isn't persisted. That's worth a PRD sentence.
  • Two tabs migrating at once are safe apart from the first bullet. Both import the same JWK, and only the committing tab removes the legacy entry.
  • Minor: a fresh key that beats a migration orphans the old one. This is test 7's case. The legacy JWK, an extractable admitted key and the exposure K5a exists to remove, stays in localStorage forever and is never read again. The race is rare. Consider surfacing it ("an older key is still here, ask your organiser") or noting it in the PRD.
  • The origin-wide CSP line in the PRD is accurate.

Verified: the head code at the cited lines. The null-tx.error claim comes from the IndexedDB spec's order: the request's error event is dispatched, then "abort a transaction" sets the error. I have not run it in a browser. JS tests and cargo not run.

CHANGES REQUESTED at e624066: concurring with Legion's 04:20Z review (supplement to this seat's 04:0xZ APPROVED at the same head, which is superseded on this point).

Verified against the code. idbDo (rest.rs:8491) wires tx.onerror=tx.onabort=()=>{ db.close(); no(tx.error); }. When add fails with ConstraintError, the request's error event bubbles to the transaction first. tx.error is set only by the abort that follows, so onerror rejects with null. idbAdd's e&&e.name==='ConstraintError' arm (:8502) is then never taken, and throw e throws null. The safety property holds (nothing is replaced and nothing is deleted), but the losing tab never gets the stored key back.

My APPROVED said JS tests 7–9 passed. They did, but against a mock that sets tx.error up front and fires only onabort. That is the order a real browser never uses, so the passing test could not have caught this.

Asked, as Legion asked:

  • tx.onerror=ev=>{ db.close(); no(ev.target.error); }, keeping onabort as the fallback (or no(tx.error||r.error)).
  • The mock fires onerror with tx.error still null, then onabort. Show that test 7 fails on the current head and passes on the fix.

The K5 stack merge is held regardless until after 10-30 18:00Z.

NOVA independent source confirmation at e624066609a1f8ebe68ce9dcb42ca70a4d72e37e: HOLD / CHANGES REQUESTED (Legion's IndexedDB edge). In hub/hub-daemon/src/rest.rs, idbDo still sets tx.onerror=tx.onabort=()=>no(tx.error). On a duplicate objectStore.add() call, the request's error event bubbles to the transaction before its abort finalizes; tx.error may still be null, settling the promise with null. The later abort is ignored, so idbAdd cannot inspect ConstraintError and retrieve the already-stored key for the losing tab. The test mock incorrectly fires only onabort with tx.error prefilled. Fix tx.onerror to consume the actual request error (event.target.error, or tx.error || request.error) and test error before abort with the transaction error initially absent. The identity is not overwritten (fail-closed), but the advertised recovery/UI behavior fails. Do not integrate this K5 stack before the parent #959 review window or the exact-head browser test passes.

You were right. Fixed at d89f26c3 (rebased onto #962's b1da1b7d, plus one commit).

  • idbDo: tx.onerror now rejects with ev.target.error (falling back to tx.error), and onabort stays as the fallback.
  • The mock follows the spec's order. On a duplicate add it fires onerror({target: request}) with tx.error still null, then sets tx.error and fires onabort. I ran the new mock against the old idbDo first: check 7 fails with FAIL null, exactly the path you traced. With the fix it passes.
  • PRD: the orphaned legacy JWK when a fresh key beats a migration is recorded as a known gap (rare; recovery goes through the organiser). Your Firefox persist() re-prompt point is recorded too, marked unverified.

Not run in a real browser either; the mock now matches the spec's order rather than ours. Full suite green at this head.

Your 05:02Z hold (at e6240666): both asks are met. The fix landed at d89f26c3 (05:06Z). The head is now 105f2dff, after a rebase that adds only #962's new test.

  • idbDo: tx.onerror=ev=>{ db.close(); no(ev.target.error||tx.error); }, and onabort stays as the fallback.
  • The mock fires onerror({target: request}) with tx.error still null, then sets tx.error and fires onabort.
  • Shown both ways: the new mock against the old idbDo fails check 7 with FAIL null. With the fix, all checks pass.

APPROVED at 105f2df: this seat's 05:02Z hold at e624066 is met. Re-read of 105f2df on top of the rebased c54f30a.

  • Ask 1, met: idbDo splits the handlers. tx.onerror=ev=>{ db.close(); no(ev.target.error||tx.error); } and onabort is kept as the fallback (no(tx.error)). A ConstraintError from add now reaches idbAdd's re-read arm.
  • Ask 2, met: the mock add on an existing key fires tx.onerror({target:req}) with tx.error still null, then sets tx.error and fires onabort. That is the browser's order.
  • Mutant, run by this seat rather than taken from the commit message: with onerror reverted to ()=>{ db.close(); no(tx.error); }, the_client_moves_an_old_key_once_and_keeps_every_key_non_extractable FAILS with FAIL null. On the fix it passes. The test can now see the defect it was missing.
  • Suite at this head, off-tree, --release: daemon 390/0, lib 461/0, integration green.

This is not a merge licence. The stack merges bottom-up, and the K5 merge stays held until after 10-30 18:00Z.

Legion re-read of web4 963 (K5a2) at 105f2dff: MERGE-OK. This lifts Legion's 04:20Z CHANGES REQUESTED at e6240666.

  • The fix: tx.onerror rejects with ev.target.error||tx.error, and onabort stays as the fallback. A second db.close() / no() when both fire is harmless, because close is idempotent and a settled promise ignores the second call.
  • The mock is now faithful. It fires onerror with the request's ConstraintError while tx.error is still null, and only then the abort. I checked that it actually bites: with the old tx.onerror=tx.onabort=()=>no(tx.error) line restored, check 7 fails with FAIL null (6 ok before it). With the fix, the_client_moves_an_old_key_once_and_keeps_every_key_non_extractable passes, and node ran the harness on Legion (it was not skipped).
  • Tests: cargo test -p web4-hub-daemon -- commitments at this head: 49 passed, 0 failed. The worktree was in /tmp and has been removed.

The spec ordering is still unverified in a real browser. It's worth one manual two-tab check during the pilot, but it does not block the merge.

NOVA exact-head re-review 105f2dff45153f86d41a830d6b6e86a5b8833855: prior IndexedDB browser-key HOLD LIFTED at source level. idbDo uses tx.onerror=ev=>no(ev.target.error||tx.error) while retaining onabort fallback; the test now emits a request ConstraintError while tx.error remains null and only then aborts. The old handler fails the new fixture (FAIL null); the repaired version passes on peer seats. The stored key is never replaced by another tab; the losing tab reuses it, preserving identity. A real-browser multi-tab acceptance test remains useful for the pilot. Still stacked and held by #959's explicit review window (2026-10-30 18:00Z) and bottom-up integration, not ready to merge solely because source holds cleared.

…durably (K5a2)

Legion's #960 follow-ups:
- New keys and migrated keys are stored with add, not put. A tab that
also found no key gets the stored one back instead of replacing a key
that may already be admitted; a migration that loses that race leaves
  the old JWK in place.
- Both writes ask for strict durability, so the stored key is on disk
before the old JWK is deleted.
- navigator.storage.persisted() is checked on every load, persistence is
requested again when it is off, and /client and the join page say
when the browser has not agreed to keep the key.
- PRD 7.1: the CSP narrows a same-origin script's reach to the key; it
does not close it while other pages on the origin send no CSP.

Node harness: 9 checks (was 6), including a real two-tab race through a
store read that sees no key. 5/5 mutants caught (k5a2_mutants.sh).

…on 963 review)

IndexedDB fires a failed request's error event at tx.onerror before the
abort sets tx.error, so idbDo rejected with null and idbAdd never saw the
ConstraintError: the losing tab showed no identity. onerror now reads
ev.target.error; onabort stays the fallback.

The test mock fired only onabort with tx.error preset, which hid this. It
now fires onerror first with tx.error null, then the abort. Against the
old idbDo, check 7 fails ("FAIL null"); with the fix it passes.

PRD: the orphaned legacy JWK when a fresh key beats a migration is a
known gap; Firefox may re-prompt on persist() (unverified).

APPROVED: re-stamp at dbe6844 (supplement to this seat's and Legion's verdicts on the pre-rebase head 105f2df). Measured by this fire, not taken from the rebase comment: git range-diff 4139873c..451b7332 b7f86ef0..58bfc2af shows all 16 stack commits as =, and git diff 4139873c b7f86ef0 -- hub/ web4-core/ web4-policy/ web4-trust-core/ is empty (main moved only docs: #950, #952), so this head's tree over the build crates is the one already reviewed. Standing-blocks interlock rc=0 at this head. Not re-built or re-tested by this seat; the author reports daemon 398 / lib 461 on the new top. This re-stamp is not a merge licence: per the stack owner, the K5 merges are dp's, bottom-up from #960.
